Sugoroku
It's been a while since I put any shipping container related buildings up. Loving the idea that you can pick this up and drop it somewhere else when your lease expires:

South China
Coming in via a very anonymous source is this amazing photo taken out on the South China Sea. Containers are without doubt cool, but how much cooler are they when they're falling over*?
* so long as it's not your stuff inside

Kwai Tsing
Hong Kong is home to the biggest container terminal in the world- Kwai Tsing. I have to work out a way to actually visit rather than just passing by. Even if I could get a taxi to drop me off I'm not sure there'd be any there to pick me up / get me out! This link is certainly worth a read for container fixation factoids:

Container St.
Some sketches for a street full of container houses. I like the idea that they are all adaptable to different people's needs and personalities. They therefore take on different appearances and give a variety reminiscent of amsterdam's modern canal houses. They'd also be cheap and eco- given their recycled credentials. I'm not sure which mine would be yet (needs more thought). Which do you like?

Casa Box
From the same guys who did back yard footy comes this rather nice box house in Sau Paulo.
During the work, the caretaker Zé Maria, still not content with his future living quarters, compared it with a can of sardines, a container as those he sees passing through the channel or even a cooler, like those used by beachgoers to carry beer.

Gentleman's Cave
A very Man Cave inspired advertising office I'd say. The meeting room supposedly has the proportians of a shipping container...

Cottage

Loving this little dutch 'holiday cottage', as seen on arch daily, and built for only 100,000 Euro. Something of the shipping container about it, but nothing of the usual beige noddy boxes.

Container House
Following hot on the heels of the huge response to yesterday's 'ultimate man cave' (well, a couple of emails) comes this container house in NZ. The interior is perhaps a little too 'man cave' (single guy?) but it's actually surprisingly responsive to it's site. Thanks to the smiff for the link.

Ultimate Man Cave

All this chat about Shipping Containers, Man Caves, and a general nostalgia for countries where space is not at quite such a premium could only mean one thing: Ed's design for the ultimate shipping container 'Man Cave'. Some thoughts / guidelines for such a concept:
- Windows are cheating. This is meant to be a cave. Roof lights may be acceptable.
- Projector will lesson 'cave' feel through images of Alpine environments.
- Walls to be covered in bikes, bike parts, tools & plastic trophies from when you may have been good.
- Red walls will promote masculinity and aggression.
- Rubber stud floors good for spilling oil on. This will add to the aroma.
- Hazard tape optional but suitable if you want a hacienda vibe (add Madchester soundtrack?).
- Chesterfield's will add a nice pseudo gentleman's club ambience (add slippers?).
- 7 bike capacity would seem suitable. One for each day of the week.

Container Obsession

Continuing on from random old stuff mixed with the new, I got thinking about about Shiguru Ban's industrial chic container art museums (above). We just don't get that sort of stuff in Hong Kong, despite being stuffed to the gills with containers (anyone know how to visit a container city?). Instead we get boring Channel by Zaha pavillions.

This Freitag HQ is also an old favorite of mine- very constructivist. And yea, seems like the container craze is catching on more and more reading this http://www.inhabitat.com/tag/shipping-containers/
Can't wait to do a container house / studio / bike store...
